Kraft Heinz, known for products such as Jell-O, Capri Sun, and Kool-Aid, has announced it will remove all artificial food dyes from its products by the end of 2027. The company will either eliminate synthetic dyes entirely or substitute them with natural colorings, affecting popular items like Kool-Aid, Crystal Light, and Jell-O.

This decision aligns Kraft Heinz with other major food manufacturers, such as PepsiCo, General Mills, and Tyson, who have also pledged to phase out synthetic dyes. The shift comes in response to growing public concern and political scrutiny over the use of petroleum-based chemicals in food, with the FDA encouraging voluntary removal and considering regulatory action if companies do not comply.

Well the company behind some of the most iconic American food products is saying goodbye to artificial food dyes. Carter tell us a bit more about this move and what it means for everything from juice to Jell-O. I mean what is Jell-O gonna look like now without that signature color? Starting today, Kraft Heinz says it won't make any new products with artificial FD&C colors and it plans to remove them from all existing products by the end of 2027. Now the change will mostly affect beverages and desserts that still contain dyes like red number 40 and yellow number 5. We're talking about items like Kool-Aid, Crystal Light and yes, Jell-O. But Kraft Heinz is just the latest food giant to ditch the synthetic dyes. PepsiCo, which makes Lay's and Tostitos and of course Pepsi, already committed to removing artificial colors. General Mills reformulated Trix cereal and Tyson says it's working to remove synthetic dyes from things like chicken nuggets. So what's driving all these changes? Well, growing public pressure and now political pressure. In April, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. criticized food producers for using petroleum-based chemicals. The FDA is now urging food companies to phase out synthetic dyes voluntarily and if they don't, the agency could revoke approvals or even require warning labels on some food items.
