Ivko, which employs a predominantly female workforce, continues to blend tradition and innovation in its work, with the family aiming to preserve their craft and legacy for future generations.

A gigantic canopy knitted from natural white wool. This is the Serbian pavilion at this year's Architecture Biennale at Venice. The artwork is entitled Unraveling. It's only on second glance that you notice that this fragile piece is slowly being undone over the six months of the exhibition. This artwork is about dynamics, because it's moving. It is about preserving heritage and culture, because knitting as a craft is very deeply rooted in our culture, but also represents the circularity, how things evolve, change and come back to their original form. So this is something that we try to achieve here. Each individual loop becomes unraveled as solar-powered motors wind the yarn onto spools. The knitted art piece leaves behind no waste and can even be reused. Environmentally friendly and sustainable. Circular economy at its best. Miloš Ivković is CEO of the Serbian knitwear label Ivko Woman. He knows the craft of knitting inside and out, but creating this particular sculpture still posed a major challenge for his company. Taking care of the weight, taking care about the yarns we are going to use, taking care about, you know, you have to really make it also aesthetically appealing, but in another hand functional. From Venice to Belgrade. The Ivko's headquarters are located here. The label specializes in knitted and woven women's fashion. Its signature style includes bold colors, striking patterns and floral motifs. Milica Njego, Miloš's sister, leads the design team. It would be presumptuous to say it's just me driving the ideas. At Ivko, design doesn't just come from a single person. It's a long process within our design team, which is made up of many talented and creative women. Each of them contributes her individuality and experience, helping an idea evolve into a theme and eventually into a collection. Milica and her mother, Danica Komenic, founded the family business in 1986. What began as a small knitwear shop selling individual pieces in the former Yugoslavia has, over the decades, grown to become an international success. Today, Ivko employs 162 people. And 140 of those are women. A lot of our production is still done manually. It's not as if you just turn on a machine and a sweater comes out. We rely heavily on craft and do a great deal by hand. When a final product is completed, it's passed through many hands. The company will remain a family business for a while to come. That much is certain. Milica's son, Maxim, recently joined the company and is responsible for marketing. The family wants to lead the company into the future together and continue undertaking ambitious projects like the one in Venice. We hope we will be able to manage and keep that knowledge and that craft that we basically gathered over all of these years. Marketing is a very interesting thing. It's very mathematical. It is very challenging. From a small knitwear shop to a symbol of Serbia. In Venice, the family-run company Ivko has created a testament to itself, even if it's a fleeting one.
