After a shooting at a school in Nashville, therapy dogs started visiting students to offer support. Steve Hartman has the story in "On the Road."

At an award ceremony, Sgt. Bowe, a therapy dog owned by retired Nashville police officer Faye Okert, was named American Humane Society Hero Dog of the Year. Sgt. Bowe and other dogs from Comfort Connections were among the first to comfort children after the 2023 Covenant School shooting in Nashville, where three children and three adults lost their lives.

Surviving students described how the presence of the therapy dogs helped them feel safer and more at ease when returning to school. The dogs continue to visit the school, offering silent companionship and emotional support to those affected by the tragedy.

At this glitzy award show, a hero was honored. This award belongs to Sgt. Bowe. Sgt. Bowe, the dog, belongs to Faye Okert, a now-retired Nashville police officer. Bowe is not one of those highly-trained police dogs. And yet, last week, he was awarded the American Humane Society Hero Dog of the Year. I never ever would have dreamed that that scruffy mutt would have such an impact. So what did he do? He lay here and go to sleep. Well, it wasn't a rescue, that's for sure. At least, not in the literal sense. Moments of terror this morning at the Covenant School. Back in 2023, a gunman murdered three children and three adults at this Christian elementary school. And one of the first on-scene to comfort the kids was this therapy dog. He took the attention away from what was going on, and he was amazing. Sgt. Bowe and some other dogs from a group called Comfort Connections visited the Covenant School the week of the shooting and continue to visit to this very day. Because, by all accounts, the results are remarkable. These kids are some of the survivors. Did everybody fear going back to school? Yeah. I just didn't feel safe. And then when I had the dogs, it just felt more, like, better for me. Yeah. It's like I could just see them or pet them or something, and they would just calm me down immediately. And that's the thing. The kids say it's not like the dogs do anything. They say they just have this way. No matter what the breed, no matter how deep your pain. They were a comforting presence in a time that, like, I needed it, like, badly. Eleanor Dickhouse lost her little sister, Evelyn, in the shooting. Evelyn was nine. Afterward, Eleanor says she struggled to cry in front of people, to let her emotions out, but not with the dogs. They can take your tears. And sometimes, like, the greatest form of hope can come from a dog that just sits there and lets you pet them. So congratulations and thanks to Sergeant Bowe and the others for showing us that when there are no words you can say to help, sometimes it helps to have no words.
