In a grim echo of a national tragedy, Kenyan authorities have exhumed five corpses from shallow graves just two kilometers from the site where over 400 followers of a doomsday cult perished two years ago.

Eleven individuals believed to be followers of cult leader Paul McKenzie have been arrested in connection with the latest findings. The Shakahola site gained international attention in 2023 when over 400 bodies were exhumed, following allegations that McKenzie instructed his followers to starve themselves to death.

Government pathologist Dr Richard Njoroge Mpazde said ten human body parts were also found scattered in nearby thickets in the Kwabenzaro area of Kilifi County, approximately two kilometers from Shakaola cult site, and that the exhumation process would resume on Friday. Investigators have identified 27 more suspected mass graves, raising fears of many more victims. Eleven suspected followers of cult leader Paul McKenzie have been arrested in connection with the new findings. In 2023, over 400 bodies were exhumed from shallow graves in Shakaola region of Kilifi County, where Pastor Paul McKenzie had instructed his followers to starve themselves to death to meet Jesus.
