Humanitarian agencies are delivering water to affected communities, but the scarcity has forced both people and animals to share limited supplies. Livestock are migrating to neighboring counties, raising concerns about potential conflicts over dwindling resources.

After three failed rainy seasons in a row, Kenya's government has placed Mandera County in what's called the alarm phase, the highest drought classification. Officials say conditions out here are deteriorating. I had 100 animals, but now I have only 20 left, the small goats. My crops in the field are dead. Drought is common in this part of the country, but this year it's worse than before. The land is parched, and lots of animals are dead, mainly sheep and goats. Many animals are dead. This animal started dying from July up to this now. Animals are trekking longer distances to find water and food. These ones did not survive. Animals are a source of wealth for people in this community. This is a graveyard, a burial ground for livestock that died during the drought. These are mainly goats, and goats are usually resilient animals. When you see them dying, it just shows you how bad the situation is. A growing number of people also need help. Water is being rationed. Delivery trucks from humanitarian agencies come when they can, depending how far they have to travel to find sources that haven't dried up. The water is shared between people and their animals. In fact, 90 to 95 percent of the communities here depend on livestock. When there's no rain for the last three seasons, consecutive three seasons, no rain, it's an indicator that there will be no grouse and pasture available. That means their livelihood will completely go off. And once their livelihood goes off, it means people have nothing, they have no other things to do. In another part of the county, a water truck drives past a dry river. Aid workers are travelling further to fetch water for communities in need.
