A child who was present at the event of Tatiana Dokhotaru's death detailed the violence at the night, alleging her ex-partner Danny Zayat, accused of her murder, beat her up.

A jury is considering the events that led to the death of Tatiana Dokotaru, who was found dead in her Sydney apartment. The prosecution alleges that her husband, Danny Zayat, inflicted fatal blows to her head, with only their young child present in the unit at the time. 

Testimony from the child described a violent incident involving broken objects and physical harm to Dokotaru. Her parents, who travelled from Canada to testify, described a history of verbal and physical abuse by Zayat, supported by video evidence of injuries. The court also heard that Dokotaru had expressed fear of Zayat and chose her residence for safety.

Jury hears evidence from child present at alleged murder

The jury is being asked to consider what happened between when Tatiana Dokotaru called triple zero in May 2023 and when her husband Danny Zayat says he returned and found her body 20 hours later. The Crown says a child was the only other person in the unit. Today the court heard evidence from the then four-year-old. The TV gets broken and the flowers get broken and the glass get broken, the child said of the events that night. Saying the accused Zayat got angry and banged Tatiana's nose a little bit. The Crown says Zayat inflicted one or more blows to Ms Dokotaru's head causing her death. Interviewed again at age six, the child said, I just heard screaming help me help me. She was laying on the couch, I was screaming in her ear, I was trying to pull her off the couch. Did Tatiana get herself back onto the couch? No, she was dead that time, she couldn't. Ms Dokotaru's parents travelled from Canada to give evidence today. Her father told the court Zayat was very vulgar, very assertive and very threatening. Her mother said he always called her a fat s***, you're a f***, come home or I'll kill you. Tatiana's mother said her daughter told her she was physically and verbally abused by Zayat. The court was shown video of injuries she said he inflicted. At other times she told her mother she had tripped over a vacuum. She also said Tatiana was very afraid of Danny and chose to live in the Liverpool apartment as she felt safer with neighbours around. Sarah Naven, 10 News.
