Welcome back. A big development in the Gilgo Beach murder case. Today, a judge ruling prosecutors can use DNA evidence obtained with new technology in suspect Rex Heuermann's trial. Fox 8's Jodi Goldberg reports from Riverhead on where the case goes from here. Good evening, guys. This ruling, almost six months after the hearing started, comes as a big win for prosecution. The judge didn't announce his decision inside the courtroom, but as the district attorney walked out, he said, quote, we won. Take a look at these photos of Rex Heuermann taken inside the courtroom. He stood silently in a suit and sported a new hairstyle. The architect from Massapequa Park was arrested back in 2023. He's charged in the murders of seven women, all sex workers, dating back to the 90s. Some of their remains found along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach. The court has heard arguments about the possible use of this DNA testing that ties him to the alleged murders. Both sides called on experts to make their case. Asa Elorab, Heuermann's ex-wife, was in the courtroom, along with families of some of the victims. This marks the first time this type of evidence will be allowed in New York. Heuermann still maintains his innocence. His defense team said he was disappointed with the decision and shot down any possibility when asked about a plea deal. They're challenging the decision, saying the lab that conducted the testing isn't licensed in New York. I think that the reason why we were able to prevail, one simple reason, the science was on our side. And that's why we won. We disagree with the court's decision. We don't agree with what the court has ruled. We think that the evidence is clear, that they did not sustain their burden, that it's general acceptance in the relevant scientific community. And we also spoke with a trial attorney separate from this case who weighed in about the judge's decision. Take a listen. To physically place the accused at the scene of the crime is a big win for the prosecutor. Certainly, if I was a defense lawyer and I just had this adverse ruling allowing DNA evidence, I'd do everything I could to try to keep it out. The next court date is scheduled for September 23rd, at which time the judge is expected to rule on the motion to preclude the evidence.
