If your New Year's resolution is to save more money, Johnson County is expanding a program that could help residents do that.

Johnson County, Kansas, is expanding its property tax relief program, making more than $350,000 available to eligible homeowners. The program, funded by federal allocations, has removed the age limit and increased the maximum home value for applicants to $500,000, broadening access beyond previous restrictions for seniors, disabled veterans, and lower-value homes.

The only remaining requirement is an income limit, and eligible homeowners can receive up to 17% of their property tax bill back. Applications for the relief program open on January 15 and will be accepted through April, with further information available on the county's website.

We recently told you how Jackson County homeowners will have longer to pay their bills and they could expect some relief from their increased assessments. Jackson County has been through a lot. They've been messed up and they've not been treated well and we're trying to fix it all. Now homeowners on the other side of the state line could also see some relief or Johnson County reporter Isabella LeDawn amplifies the voices of county leaders on how you can get money back. If your New Year's resolution is to save more money, Joko is expanding a program that could help you do that. I'm Isabella LeDawn and I cover Johnson County this week. Homeowners can apply for property tax relief to help with this year's bill. It's the time of the year where the temperatures drop, but the property bills can go up. We wanted to be able to help people directly. Johnson County has provided tax relief for two years, but only for seniors, disabled veterans and homeowners with an appraised value less than $384,000. We've broadened the pool to hopefully have more people utilize the program starting this week. Those barriers are going away. Joko removed the age limit for applicants and raised the maximum home value to $500,000. I expect that we will have more applicants this year than we had in year two or year one. Joko Chairman Mike Kelly explained the relief dollars come from federal funds that have already been allocated to relief. This program doesn't impact our ability to provide great service for EMS for the Sheriff's Department for the Department of Health and Environment for your parks for your libraries. The county is prepared to give out more than $350,000 this year, nearly double the amount from last year's relief. I fully anticipate that we will find a line item of funding for this into 2027 and beyond. The one requirement that remains is the income limit for homeowners. If you fall within the limit, you can get some of those county tax dollars back. Even if it's only 17% of your property tax bill, we know that providing that 17% back to the residents can have a really meaningful impact on folks.
