They take stock of the chaos wreaked by Hurricane Melissa. Jamaica has gone through what I can call one of its worst periods. Our infrastructure has been severely compromised. Right across the country, almost every parish is experiencing black roads, fallen trees, utility poles, and excess flooding in many communities. After making landfall, the Category 5 hurricane ripped a path of destruction through Jamaica, devastating homes from torrential rain and ferocious winds of over 300 kilometers per hour at its peak. Government officials described St. Elizabeth, one of the island's largest parishes, as underwater, and said that over half a million Jamaicans are without electricity. But amid this communication blackout, a full assessment of the damage could take days. As the world waits for a more complete picture of the destruction, U.S. President Donald Trump says he is prepared to send aid to the island nation. Well, we have to. On a humanitarian basis, we have to. So we're watching it closely, and we're prepared to move. But, you know, it's doing tremendous damage. As we speak, it's right there right now. Now a Category 3 storm, Melissa has moved on to Cuba. Residents are bracing as the hurricane slowly passes over the island, causing extreme flooding and storm swells. The country's president has already reported extensive damage.
