Iran urges U.N. condemnation of consulate building attack in Syria

During an emergency Security Council meeting, a U.N. plea for caution in response to Israel's attack on Iran's diplomatic consulate in Damascus. Any miscalculation could lead to broader conflict in an already volatile region, with devastating consequences for civilians who are already seeing unprecedented suffering. Russia echoed the views of many council members, saying Israel is clearly the aggressor. We are of the view that such aggressive actions by Israel are designed to further fuel the conflict. They are absolutely unacceptable and must stop. Algeria said the timing of Israel's strike was deliberate. It is evident that this dangerous act is of nature to draw the entire region into conflict. What makes Israel's attack so troubling to many diplomats that work in this building is that it was a direct violation of many longstanding international agreements, such as the Vienna Convention, meant to protect diplomatic facilities from unprovoked aggressions. Even the United States, Israel's strongest ally, signaled they were troubled by it. We do not yet have confirmation of the status of the building that was struck in Damascus. Any confirmed attack on property that was in fact a diplomatic facility would be of concern to the United States. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the attack and did not ask to attend the meeting. Iran did, and said the strike shows how Israel is a threat to the region. Israel agenda is obvious, to escalate and perpetuate the conflict while evading accountability. Iran told the council it reserves the right to take a decisive response, something many on the council were warning against, but know could very well be likely.
