Struggling chipmaker Intel is poised to announce plans to cut more than 20% of its staff this week, Bloomberg has learned. Jane Lanhee Lee reports on the difficulties facing the tech company.

Intel, a major player in the semiconductor industry, is reportedly planning to announce a reduction of more than 20% of its workforce. This substantial downsizing effort comes amid efforts by the company's new CEO to revive an engineering-driven culture within the organization. The move reflects the difficulties Intel is facing, particularly as it grapples with declining sales and challenges related to new product launches.

Comparatively, Intel's employee numbers are large. The company not only designs but also manufactures chips, unlike some competitors who only design them. For instance, Nvidia focuses only on design with about 31,000 employees, while AMD has 28,000 staff members. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which serves as a contract manufacturer, has around 76,000 employees. These numbers highlight the scalability of Intel, reflected also by its more extensive operations.

The announcement of the staff reduction is expected to coincide with Intel's forthcoming financial report. As the industry navigates through a period of transformation, it remains to be seen how this restructuring aligns with broader strategies within the semiconductor sector. This move raises questions about whether Intel is merely streamlining or pursuing a broader strategic shift.

So for more on this let's bring in our Asia tech reporter Jane Lanny Lee. Jane first off 20 percent. If this comes to pass is quite a sizable reduction. But what is actually the goal of a restructuring of this magnitude. Right. I mean it's hard to say if these cuts go deep enough. It is a huge chunk if it's announced at this level. And but in comparison you know in video which doesn't have chip making facilities. They just designed them. So they have about 31000 employees. AMD has about 28000 employees. Again they only design chips and TSMC which is a contract manufacturer that makes the chips for these you know other fabulous as we say design chip design houses have about 76000. So you know Intel has design and it has the foundry business which is its business for making chips for itself and for others. So you know it it does bring it under the level of a TSMC plus an NVIDIA example. But yeah it'll it remains to be seen if if that will go deep enough considering some of the difficulties Intel faces especially with a lot of its sales dropping and challenges with new products etc.. OK Jane thank you so much for getting us up to speed. The company reports I believe on Thursday. So we'll see if they do manage to confirm that going into that. And certainly more interesting point there as well as Jane was just underscoring there is this simply trimming the fat back to this reversion to the mean that we see in the industry.
