Indonesia has officially recognized former President Suharto as a national hero during a ceremony at the presidential palace in Jakarta. The award was presented by President Prabowo Subianto, Suharto's son-in-law, to Suharto's family, acknowledging his contributions to the nation's development.

The decision has drawn criticism from rights activists and survivors of his regime, who highlight the mass killings, forced disappearances, and corruption associated with his rule. Suharto, who led Indonesia for over three decades, remains a divisive figure due to both his economic achievements and the widespread human rights abuses during his presidency.

Former President Suharto, who ruled Indonesia for more than three decades, now recognized officially as a national hero. What matters is we look at what my father did from his youth until he passed away, which was his struggle for the nation and the people. President Prabowo Subianto, who was Suharto's son-in-law, presented the award to Suharto's family. The moderator announced him as a prominent figure since independence. Suharto seized control from the first President Sukarno in the late 1960s, ushering in a period of economic growth, industrialization and improved living standards for many. But his legacy remains contentious for many Indonesians. This portrait at the ceremony stood beside that of Marcina, a labor activist who was kidnapped and murdered during his rule. It's a blatant whitewashing of historical crimes. There were millions of people being killed under Suharto's authoritarian regimes. Suharto's rise to power coincided with one of the worst massacres of the 20th century. Experts say a military-led purge of communists in the 1960s, which targeted ethnic Chinese, trade unionists and others, resulted in the deaths of between half a million to three million people. Rights activists say Suharto played a key role in orchestrating the killings. Bejo Undung was a student when he was accused of associating with the Communist Party and, like many, detained for years without trial. I have to be interrogated with an electrical shock and then tortured. I'm very, very... I cannot hide my anger. I have to reject Suharto should not be a hero. Suharto's presidency marked a period where thousands of people were forcibly disappeared and hundreds of thousands were slaughtered in extrajudicial killings, as well as East Timor being violently occupied. State prosecutors accused Suharto of embezzling hundreds of millions of dollars, enriching his family and inner circle, although judges ruled he was too ill to stand trial.
