Shapley addressed concerns about the possible politicization of the IRS, stating he is loyal to evidence rather than any political agenda. He assured that investigations would only proceed if supported by evidence, and reiterated his willingness to act in defense of proper procedure if necessary.

In tonight's Eye on America, an update on a CBS News exclusive we brought you in the spring of 2023. Then-IRS Special Agent Gary Shapley told us the agency was slow-walking the tax investigation of Hunter Biden. Now Shapley will soon head up IRS criminal investigations, the very division on which he blew the whistle. He talked again exclusively with Jim Axelrod, and Shapley wants you to know he is speaking for himself and not the IRS. Agent Gary Shapley, the incoming head of law enforcement for the IRS. Did you get this job because you stared down the Biden administration? I think this is just what happened the last three years was showing the type of person I am, the type of integrity I have. Actually, you may remember him. Three years ago, Shapley burst into public view, the IRS agent blowing the whistle on the Biden Justice Department. It was something like physical in me. It was something emotionally in me. It was like I knew what was right. As he writes in a new book, Shapley alleged prosecutors were obstructing a high-profile tax case he was working on involving Joe Biden's son, Hunter. Recommended felony charges. His testimony jump-started the case, which eventually led to Hunter Biden pleading guilty to nine tax-related charges. In the depths of my addiction, I was extremely irresponsible with my finances. That must have been an enormous feeling of vindication. Yeah, it is vindication. In addition to vindication, Shapley got a new assignment. He will now oversee for the Trump administration criminal investigations at the same agency he blew the whistle on under Biden. It doesn't matter who's in office. Every single day, I approach my job the same way. But Gary Shapley and the 2,200 agents who will now work under him could soon be tested. In September, President Trump wrote on social media that he is recommending that those funding Antifa be thoroughly investigated. I hear names of some pretty rich people that are radical left people. What will you do if the current White House asks you to investigate a political enemy? Each and every time, I'm going to ensure that the right thing's done, and that the policies and procedures are followed. And that's my credo. In a letter last month, a group of Democratic senators warned Shapley against using the IRS as a weapon to target political enemies. We're not going to recommend something that we don't believe the evidence is there to support. Shapley says it's simple. He's loyal to the evidence, not any agenda. But in this broader issue that the IRS can be weaponized, what can you say to people who are concerned about becoming a target of the IRS for political reasons? I put my neck on the line to protect what was right. And you would do it again? I hope I don't have to, but I will do it again if I have to, yes. A rare promise in American politics these days.
