The Trump administration's appeal for the high court is the latest escalation in the president's efforts to deploy National Guard troops in Democratic-led cities. Lower courts have ruled against the president, the administration calling it part of a disturbing and recurring pattern that ultimately impedes the president's authority over the military. Justice Department lawyers say the president has had no choice but to call up the National Guard after state and local leaders have failed to quell the violence from immigration protests. The administration is responding after a federal appeals court refused to lift a Chicago-based district judge's temporary restraining order on the deployments. The three judge panels saying, in part, we see insufficient evidence of a rebellion or danger of rebellion in Illinois. The spirited, sustained, and occasionally violent actions of demonstrators in protest of the federal government's immigration policies and actions, without more, does not give a rise to a danger of rebellion against the government's authority. There were more protests at the ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois, on Friday. More than a dozen people were arrested, charged with resisting, obstruction, or disobeying police. Local reports indicate this was the first large gathering at the facility, after federal authorities removed metal fencing around the facility earlier this week.
