Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor, announced he is seeking the warrants for alleged war crimes, including the use of starvation as a weapon of war and attacks on civilians during warfare.

Khan is also seeking arrest warrants for three senior Hamas leaders: Yahya Sinwa, Mohammed Da'if, and Ismail Haniyeh. These warrants are based on evidence connecting them to international crimes committed in Israel and the Palestinian territories since October 7, 2023.

If the ICC panel of judges issues the charges, it would mark the first instance of such high-ranking officials from a close ally of the United States being charged by the ICC. Although the US and Israel are not ICC members, the prosecutor claims jurisdiction through Palestinian accession to the court's jurisdiction in 2015, covering incidents in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza.



I.C.C. prosecutor seeks arrest warrant for Netanyahu

Let's start first with this latest from the International Criminal Court, and the chief prosecutor there has asked for arrest warrants, first of all against the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes. Another warrant was issued against the Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Galant. The ICC prosecutor also asking for arrest warrants for three Hamas leaders for their alleged roles in the October 7th attacks in Israel. On the basis of evidence collected and examined and analyzed by my office, I have reasonable grounds to believe that three senior leaders of Hamas, Yahya Sinwa, Mohammed Da'if, and Ismail Haniyeh, bear criminal responsibility for the following international crimes committed on the territory of Israel and the state of Palestine from at least the 7th of October 2023. Well, we're going to get more reaction now from Iris Mackler, who is live in Jerusalem for us. Iris, we just heard what Karim Khan, the ICC prosecutor, had to say about the Hamas leaders. What did he have to say about Israeli leaders? He said that he was also going to seek arrest warrants against the Prime Minister and the Defense Minister for crimes including using starvation as a weapon of war, attacking civilians during warfare, and other crimes against humanity. If he does succeed, it now goes to an ICC panel of judges. If they do charge the two Israeli leaders, it will be the first time that an ally of the United States has been charged in this way, a close ally of the United States. It's important to say that neither the US nor Israel are members of the ICC, but that Karim Khan says that the ICC has jurisdiction because the Palestinians have given him leave to investigate what happens in East Jerusalem, what happens in the West Bank, and what happens in Gaza, and that occurred back in 2015. So that's what the state of play is at the moment, and we don't yet know if it will happen, but it will be huge if it does.
