Hurricane Kiko, which previously reached category four status, has weakened to a category one hurricane as it approaches Hawaii from the east. The storm's center is expected to remain well north of the islands, with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour. While some showers and rain, totaling one to two inches, are expected to affect Hawaii, the main impact will be limited, with heavier rainfall possible in mountainous areas. The storm is forecast to further weaken to a tropical storm soon, and no significant threats are anticipated for the region. Weather conditions in the Atlantic remain quiet, with low likelihood of tropical development in the near future.

Hurricane Kiko expected to clip Hawaii from the north

When we take a look at the radar here, some of this is supplemented by satellite data. You'll notice, and we've talked about this, in fact, Anna did a special update on this last week, storms that severely impact Hawaii come in from the south because the water's still warm in that area, but when they come in from the east, they tend to deteriorate and weaken a bit because that water's a lot colder. So you can see the center of the storm is still way off to the east, but the storm is nothing like its former status when it was a category four hurricane. Now it's a weakening category one hurricane, 85 mile per hour max sustained winds. You can see this is kind of more disheveled than it once was, and the center of the storm is gonna stay to the north by a pretty good margin, well to the north of Hawaii, and it'll become a tropical storm by this time tomorrow, probably overnight tonight or early tomorrow morning. And here we have future radar. It gives you a pretty good sense that, yes, there will be some showers and rain that clip the islands, but the core of the storm stays decisively north, one to two inches of rain likely. The AccuWeather local storm, max 10 inches. Now keep in mind, there are areas in Hawaii that see over 400 inches in an average year. So there's a little bit of enhancement here in the mountainous areas where we can see quite a bit more than the one to two inches under some heavy showers, but that's not as rare as a 10 inch rain event in other parts of the country. So some impacts are coming. We'll keep an eye out in the Atlantic, by the way, as we've been watching some tropical waves. Two low likelihood areas of development next weekend into the following week. Nothing urgent in the Atlantic, it's unusually quiet.
