It's the third week of demonstrations and comes after another wave of arrests of people accused of conspiracy against the state. Among them, opposition leader Ahmed Najib Shebi, activist Shaima Issa and human rights lawyer Ayashi Hammami. All have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from five to 20 years. As a citizen, this is the worst situation I have ever witnessed in Tunisia. A miserable system of tyranny, injustice and repression. Young people, politicians, artists, journalists, human rights offenders are all being targeted. Anyone who dares to speak out ends up in prison. President Kays Said suspended parliament in 2021 and has since cracked down on political opponents, tightened his grip on previously independent institutions and rewritten the constitution to increase his power. Protesters are hoping they can unite to reclaim their rights. In December 2010, there was oppression but people were united. And that's the idea we've come to defend, for us to rise as a people to reinstate democracy. Fifteen years after the revolution, Human Rights Watch warns that Tunisia is witnessing a return to dictatorship.
