Food on store shelves was purchased and imported under higher tariffs and is now being stored in warehouses. Retailers need to sell those items at the higher price to recoup those costs. It takes about six months for prices to increase and go down once disruptions are resolved, and there is no guarantee that prices will return to the lower levels. On top of that, not all tariffs are being reduced. Steel and aluminum tariffs were raised from 25% to 50%, impacting the price of canned goods like cranberries and cream of mushroom soup, as well as machinery. Imported fertilizers have also faced double-digit tariffs, raising the cost of growing crops needed to produce animal feed. Other factors are at play as well. Cocoa inventories have seen a smaller crop due to drought. Bird flu is impacting 2 million turkeys, leading to the smallest U.S. flock in 40 years. And a ringworm outbreak in Mexico has resulted in a U.S. ban on all Mexican beef. This comes at a time when the U.S. herd is at its smallest in 74 years. But there is some good news. Retailers are offering a variety of affordable Thanksgiving Day dinner packages. By substituting brand names to private label versions, the price of the meal is either the same or less than last year. And also I want to thank Walmart because they came up with a fantastic study. It was the cost of Thanksgiving coming up and the cost of Thanksgiving from a year ago under Sleepy Joe Biden, and we're 25% lower this year than we were a year ago. Those familiar with Walmart's bundle tell CNBC this year's bundle has 30% less product.
