A year ago today, I watched as an attempted assassin opened fire on then-candidate Donald Trump. The fear and chaos of that day was unlike anything I had previously experienced. And I questioned in the moment whether Donald Trump was safe, but also if his ambitions of becoming president yet again were going to be forever impacted by the events that had unfolded. The answer to both of those questions was yes. July 13, 2024 became the most defining and pivotal moments of the 2024 race. Just days later, we saw so many big monumental things happen. 48 hours after Butler, Donald Trump announced then-Senator J.D. Vance was going to be his vice presidential randy-mate. After that, Trump triumphantly took the stage at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, wearing an ear bandage after his ear had been grazed by a bullet. Days after that, the former President Joe Biden announced that he was withdrawing from the 2024 race after his disastrous debate performance in June. Now, I caught up recently with an official here at the White House who had also worked on Donald Trump's 2024 campaign. They told me essentially that it became far more personal, the campaign, but also their goal of winning the election ever since Butler had happened. Take a listen to what he told me. He said, quote, If people were going to try to do this, we were going to go even harder. It became bigger than the election. Now, something that strikes me a year out from Butler is how that powerful image of Donald Trump bloodied, raising his fist in the air and screaming, continues to be a symbol of defiance and strength for the president, but also for the entire MAGA movement. That image is now hanging in both the West and East wings of the White House.
