Chickpeace is a Hamburg-based catering startup run entirely by women, many of whom come from refugee backgrounds. The initiative was founded by social worker Manuela Maurer to address the isolation and employment barriers faced by migrant women in Germany, such as language difficulties, childcare responsibilities, and discrimination.

Through shared cooking and teamwork, Chickpeace has grown to include over ten women, most of whom have become German citizens. The group now serves around 1,000 customers and plans to open a canteen and training academy, aiming to further empower women and promote equality in the German job market.

How Chickpeace empowers women

These women cook their way to independence. Together, they run Chickpeas, an all-female catering startup in Hamburg. In Germany, women from refugee backgrounds face huge barriers when trying to find work, from language and childcare, access to training and discrimination. How did these women overcome so many hurdles? At the heart of Chickpeas stands Manuela Maurer, a social worker who realized that the first barrier for women arriving in Germany was isolation. To overcome this, she started cooking with them at a refugee shelter. What started as shared meals grew into something bigger. Women are perceived differently in the family. They gain a lot of pride and recognition, especially when women stand on their own two feet. For Fadwa, once a teacher in Aleppo, Chickpeas means more than just a job. Everyone pitches in, from cooking to delivery. Maida Batal, a Kurdish woman from Syria, is delivering meals to a hospice today, one of now around 1,000 customers. For this mother of two, Chickpeas means community. With Chickpeas, Maisa unlocked her leadership potential and now dreams of opening her own family restaurant one day. Over 10 women are part of Chickpeas today. Most of them are now German citizens. Soon they'll open their own canteen and training academy.
