The US Department of Health and Human Services has issued a directive restricting undocumented immigrants' access to several health care programs. This change reverses a decades-old interpretation of a 1996 law and could affect millions of people annually.

Under the new policy, undocumented immigrants will no longer be eligible for programs such as Head Start, which provides education and health care assistance to children, and the Community Health Center program. However, federal law continues to require hospitals to provide emergency medical treatment to all patients, regardless of immigration status.
