Northeastern United States

A significant winter storm affected the Northeastern and Midwestern United States, delivering multiple rounds of snowfall, with up to six inches reported in the Philadelphia suburbs and heavy accumulations expected in areas near the Great Lakes. The storm led to hazardous road conditions, including whiteouts and a 75-mile interstate closure in North Dakota, and resulted in minor injuries in Massachusetts after a mail truck was overturned.

Cold weather advisories and hard freeze warnings were issued from Pittsburgh and New Jersey up through Chicago and into northern Florida, with wind chills dropping well below zero in several cities. Lake effect snow is expected to continue for several days, with some regions forecast to receive up to 20 inches of additional snow, and cold temperatures are predicted to persist through the coming weekend.

In northern New Jersey, snow plows were out in full force, working to clear the wintry weather off the roads. As long as it doesn't stay too long, get ugly. We're good. South of Boston in Middleborough, Massachusetts, a postal worker was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after the storm flipped this mail truck onto its side. Around the Great Lakes, whiteout conditions created treacherous driving, like on this interstate in western Michigan, where drivers battled low visibilities in North Dakota. Blowing snow prompted the state's Highway Patrol to close down a 75 mile stretch of Interstate 29 from Grand Forks to the Canadian border. And on Sunday, an unusual sight. Snow coating palm trees in the south as a wintry mix hit parts of Florida, Georgia and Alabama for the second year in a row, driven in hurricanes. I've never driven in snow and back in the northeast. Some made the most of the snow on a holiday weekend, sledding in Philadelphia and skiing in New Jersey. As this winter weather keeps bearing down, stay warm, stay dry. That's it. It's cold as hell outside. They got out there at least had a good time with it, but the cold air now has moved in. So all that snowman type of snow is now the fluffy, very cold stuff. That's gonna be the main story going forward, although there is still some snow in eastern New England. So Boston, you're still dealing with for another hour or two, so we'll still see some accumulations. But it's the colder air that's filtering in the lake effect. Snow machine will begin to crank up and last for a good couple of days, so that will pile up Buffalo southward towards Erie, Syracuse northward towards Watertown and then the Lee of Lake Michigan as well. You'll see at least six, if not up to 20 inches of snow in there. But we've got cold weather advisories out from Pittsburgh in New Jersey for tomorrow up through Chicago. Chicago's game yesterday. That was just miserable, and it's miserable this morning. Wind chills were well below zero there and in Minneapolis and hard freeze warnings again across parts of north Florida. So that's gonna be very, very difficult to take across the eastern half of the country, and we'll see you come some reinforcing shots of this going forward.
