Northern Queensland has been hit by intense rainfall, with more than 200 millimetres recorded in a single day from Ingham to Cairns. Authorities report that heavy to intense rain is forecast to persist for several days, with daily totals ranging from 60 to 200 millimetres and isolated areas potentially receiving even more.

Floodwaters are already affecting roads and embankments, prompting officials to advise residents to stay alert and prepared for possible flooding. Both long-term residents and newcomers are encouraged to seek guidance from neighbours and local authorities, as the region braces for continued wet weather.

North Queensland's wet season coming out in full force. More than 200 millimetres of rain fell in just 24 hours from Ingham to Cairns. And on the horizon is the looming threat of more. So we're expecting heavy to intense rainfall to continue across northern Queensland for several days. The water is already covering roads and embankments are quickly filling up. So across northern Queensland, expecting daily rainfall totals typically in the 60 to 200 millimetre range. But there is that potential to see some isolated falls of 200 to 300 millimetres plus. It isn't an unfamiliar sight for locals. More than a metre of water covered Townsville in February this year. So it's not quite reaching the same heights as we saw earlier this year, particularly around that Ingham and Cobble region where we did see more of a metre, even up to two metres of rainfall. And while the advice is to stay alert, there are fears over the possibility of a repeat. A lot of people very anxious about the wet season, knowing that rain is coming, there's people on high alert. But once again, we're asking people to be prepared. While some Queenslanders are used to the onslaught of rain in the north, there's also advice for those who are new to the area. Please get in contact with your neighbours, talk to the local authorities, get an understanding of what a north Queensland wet season looks like. Because it's unlikely we've seen the last of it. We'd like to leave all the wet weather in 2025, but once again, you never know what the weather's going to do. Christina Puljack, 10 News.
