Tanya had sent videos and messages to friends and family detailing the violence she suffered, and sought police protection prior to her death in 2023.

Zayat claimed Tanya died from a drug overdose and denied any physical abuse, but the jury determined that blows to her head caused her death. He now faces the possibility of life imprisonment, with Tanya's loved ones planning to attend his sentencing.

This is Tanya in happier times with her friend Amber Halita in her home city of Vancouver. She was beautiful inside and out. She was so pure, true, kind, loving. In their two decades of friendship, the pair became roommates and travelled the world. A week before Tanya died, she got these tattoos. Strength is what we gain from the madness we survive. Tragically, her life was taken by her violent ex-partner Danny Zayat. Shock, devastatement, there really is no words. In her last moments alive, Tanya told Triple Zero operators Danny was robbing her. Give me my money. Give me my money. He's bashing me. Danny's tears failing to convince a jury of his innocence. Amber says Tanya had a powerful voice in her murder trial, sending friends videos of her injuries in the lead up to her 2023 murder. She definitely left a trail. She left little pieces of a puzzle everywhere. Messages also shown to the jury. He spat at me like 20 times, said he was going to kill me. I was fighting him off. I tried calling the cops and he said he will kill me if I do. She had sent me videos saying that he tried to rip her tongue right out of her mouth and he had squeezed her so hard that he had fractured parts of her throat. She sought a police ADVO. She communicated with friends, with family. And as her friend, I am proud of her, but as her solicitor, I couldn't have asked for her to have done more. The jury found blows to the head killed Tanya. Danny Zayat claimed she had died of a drug overdose and that he had never physically assaulted her. No physical abuse or nothing like that. Autopsy will come back and clear my name. He now faces the prospect of life behind bars, with Amber hoping to return to Australia with Tanya's father for Zayat's sentencing. And I just want her to be remembered for the late that she really was. Sarah Naven, 10 News.
