A possible end to the deadlock in talks between Israel and Hamas, bringing a glimmer of hope for a ceasefire. On Sunday, Donald Trump issued what he called a last warning to Hamas, telling them to release all the remaining hostages in Gaza and accept Washington's ceasefire proposal or face consequences. A few hours later, the Islamist group said it was ready to resume negotiations. We received some ideas from the American side through mediators to reach a ceasefire agreement and Hamas is prepared to immediately sit at the negotiating table. The Forum for Hostages Families welcomed what it called a true breakthrough. The personal guarantee of the President of the United States is a historic step without precedent. Such an agreement would advance a broader regional agreement, secure the release of all hostages, allow soldiers and reservists to return home. Returning to Washington from New York, where he had been attending the U.S. Open tennis final, Donald Trump said he had had good discussions and could see an agreement taking shape. Again, it's a problem we want to solve for the Middle East, for Israel, for everybody. But it's a problem we're going to get done. They have hostages. It could be a little bit less than 20 because they tend to die, right? Trump's proposal would see the release of all hostages on the first day of an eventual ceasefire in exchange for several thousand Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. But Hamas is insistent that all Israeli troops withdraw from Gaza as part of the deal at a time when the Israeli military is expanding its operations in the enclave.
