Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced Haniyeh's death shortly after he attended a swearing-in ceremony for Iran's new president. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the assassination, according to Iran's state media. 

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed his desire to defuse rising tensions in the region, advocating for diplomatic solutions while also emphasizing US support for Israel's defense if necessary.

The incident follows close on the heels of Israel's claim to have killed a Hezbollah commander responsible for a deadly attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. These developments further complicate the prospects for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Senior Hamas official Sami Abou Zourey described the killing as an escalation aimed at undermining Hamas' resolve but expressed confidence in their eventual victory.

Haniyeh, who has been Hamas' leader since 2017, had been an important figure in international diplomacy efforts, often traveling between Turkey and Qatar. The International Criminal Court had previously requested an arrest warrant for Haniyeh over alleged war crimes, alongside a similar request for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

I think there's always room and opportunities for diplomacy and I'd like to see parties pursue those opportunities. However, Austin also said the United States would help defend Israel if it were attacked. Appointed as Hamas' leader in 2017, he often travelled between Turkey and Qatar for ceasefire talks or to talk to Hamas' ally Iran. The International Criminal Court Prosecutor Office requested an arrest warrant for him over alleged war crimes at the same time it issued a similar request against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theophilos III - visiting the Christian town of Taybeh with other clerics - said settlers had started a fire near a cemetery and a 5th century church there last week.
