Several thousand Haitians participated in the annual Voodoo-Christian pilgrimage, which was held in a rural area of Port-au-Prince instead of the traditional site at Saut d’Eau. The relocation was prompted by ongoing gang violence, with gangs having taken control of the usual pilgrimage location since March. 

The event, which honors both the Vodou goddess Aisle Dente and the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, saw faithful invited to pray for their country during a mass service. According to the United Nations, gang violence in Haiti has resulted in over 5,600 deaths in 2024.

Same protagonists, but a different scenery. In Haiti, several thousand people on Wednesday took part in the annual pilgrimage to honour Vodou goddess Aisle Dente and the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. This year, faithful gathered in a rural part of Port-au-Prince, instead of the usual sacred waterfall of Soudo, about 50km from the capital. Gangs attacked the central Haitian city in March and have retained control since. On Wednesday, videos posted on social media showed gang members standing in the town's church. I am a practicing Vodou priest and it's important to be here anyway and celebrate our mother the Virgin Mary on her day and to say thank you. Faithful were invited to pray for their country during mass service. Gang violence in Haiti has killed more than 5,600 people in 2024, according to the United Nations.
