U.S. President Trump has floated Greenland as a new strategic priority, citing national security concerns as well as the island's pivotal location and vast, untapped resources, from oil and gas to critical minerals.

Greenland, an Arctic territory belonging to Denmark, is experiencing rapid environmental changes due to climate change, which is exposing significant deposits of natural resources. Among these are vast reserves of rare earth elements, which are essential for modern technologies such as wind turbines, electric vehicles, and military equipment. 

According to the US Geological Survey, Greenland could hold the world's second largest reserves of rare earths after China, with more than 36 million tonnes reported by Greenland's Mineral Portal. However, harsh conditions and limited infrastructure currently make extraction costly, though ongoing warming is expected to make these resources more accessible in the future.

Greenland's mineral riches that Trump is eyeing

Climate change is transforming Greenland, and not just its landscape. As the ice retreats, something else is emerging, access to a vast and largely untapped wealth of natural resources. The Arctic Territory, which belongs to Denmark, is believed to hold not only significant oil and gas reserves, but also enormous deposits of rare earth elements, vital components in emerging technologies, such as wind turbines, electric car batteries, semiconductors, and military equipment such as fighter jets and drones. According to the Greenland's Mineral Portal, the area has more than 36 million tonnes of rare earths, resources or naturally occurring deposits. Were it all accessible, it would represent the second largest known reserves after China, according to the US Geological Survey. Right now, up to 60% of rare earths elements are mined in China, meaning Beijing sets supply and prices. It's tightened or even banned the export of certain rare earths and critical minerals like gallium and germanium to the US in recent years, as trade tensions have grown. Rare earths and minerals, Greenland appears to have in abundance. At the moment, frost, very little transportation, and industrial infrastructure make sourcing those natural resources expensive. But as the Arctic is warming up four times faster than the rest of the world, melting Greenland's ice shield, those natural resources will become cheaper to access.
