The Greek government has announced a temporary suspension of asylum application processing for migrants arriving from Africa, following a significant increase in arrivals on the island of Crete. The suspension will initially last for three months, during which migrants entering the country illegally will be arrested and detained.

Additionally, Greece plans to establish one or two permanent closed detention centers for migrants on Crete. Discussions with Libya are ongoing, and Greek authorities have indicated a willingness to cooperate with Libyan officials to prevent boats from departing. The measures come after over 2,000 migrants landed on Crete in a short period, contributing to a broader rise in migration to Greece.

The recent surge in illegal migration to the island of Crete has led the Greek government to take stricter measures to tackle the problem. On Wednesday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced after a meeting with Minister of Migration Policy Thanos Plevris a series of emergency measures to deal with the crisis. The Greek government will temporarily suspend the processing of asylum applications for migrants arriving from Africa initially for three months. Those immigrants who enter the country illegally will be arrested and detained. The second decision is to establish one or possibly two permanent closed detention centers for migrants on the island of Crete. Mitsotakis also said the government's discussions with Libya are ongoing. He also warned that the Greek armed forces are willing to cooperate with Libyan authorities in order to prevent boats from leaving from Libya. The Greek government is sending a message of determination that it is closing the road to Greece and is sending it to all traffickers and to all of their clients that the money they are spending may be completely lost because it will be much more difficult than it was before. The Greek premier's remarks were made after more than 2,000 migrants landed on Crete since the weekend. The Mediterranean country has seen a spike in illegal migration recently, with more than 60,000 believed to have arrived last year, a 25 percent increase from 2023 figures.

The Trump administration branded the event as one of the steps it is taking to reshape its relationship with the African continent.
