Last year, Pellicot's husband Dominique admitted that for nearly a decade he drugged her and recruited dozens of men online to rape her while she was unconscious. He was sentenced to 20 years in jail, and all of the Frenchman's 50 co-defendants were also found guilty of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. Among them is 43-year-old Houssemettan Dawan, who was at a Nimes court to appeal his sentence of nine years in prison on charges of aggravated rape. His lawyer Sylvie Manviel said her client cannot accept the guilty verdict, as he believed he was participating in a threesome for which he didn't know at the time that Giselle Pellicot hadn't given her consent. In French criminal law, intent is crucial in assessing guilt. The revelations that he discovered while in police custody destroyed him and lost him, truly lost. The court will hear his appeal until Wednesday. 72-year-old Pellicot has become a symbol of female courage and resilience for waiving her right to anonymity and standing up to her abusers. Outside the courtroom, dozens of people held banners showing her their support. This supporter says she was at Pellicot's trial last year in Avignon, and she's here today, even if there's only one accused. I recognize her great courage and her strength, and that's also why I support her. Pellicot's case prompted deep soul-searching in France, spurring debate on whether to shift to a rape law based on consent, and prompting the medical community to deepen its understanding of drug-facilitated assault.
