The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) held its annual summit in Manama, Bahrain, focusing on collective security and regional stability. The meeting was the first since an Israeli airstrike in Qatar targeting Hamas leaders, which resulted in six deaths and international condemnation. 

GCC leaders reiterated their commitment to mutual defense and cooperation with allied states, while also discussing economic diversification and the advancement of the Gulf Common Market. The summit reaffirmed support for efforts to end the war in Gaza and provide aid to Palestinians, but experts noted that regional rivalries and tensions with Iran continue to pose challenges to the bloc's goals.

GCC summit in Bahrain focuses on collective security

Top officials and heads of state from the Gulf Cooperation Council meeting in the Bahraini capital Manama. The GCC, consisting of six member states, was established in 1981 as a regional alliance promoting cooperation and collective security. A final communique from the meeting in Manama said security and stability of all members are indivisible and any infringement of the sovereignty of one constituted a direct threat to all. This was the first annual gathering of the GCC since Israel's attack targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar in September. Six people were killed in the airstrike that drew international outcry and condemnation. The GCC leaders emphasised their standing shoulder to shoulder in the face of any threat any of the member states may come under. The heads of the GCC states also reiterated the importance of reinforcing partnership and cooperation with friendly and allied states, global and regional organisations. Israel's action in the region has focused the attention of GCC countries. We don't want any kind of escalation in the region and we don't want anybody basically to export any problems to our border. What happened to Doha, it's basically a message for everybody in the region that Israel can attack any time, any place, anywhere. Their attack is basically unpredictable and that really does not intimidate the GCC countries to actually accelerate their coordination. There was also a reaffirmation of support for international efforts to end the war in Gaza and the supply of vital aid to the 1.5 million Palestinians inside Gaza as winter temperatures drop. Economic diversification was also discussed, a topic of vital importance in the Gulf where economies remain so dependent on their rich oil and gas resources. Leaders also stressed the need to continue towards the long sought after Gulf Common Market and Customs Union. Experts have said regional rivalries in the Gulf have sometimes hindered the Gulf Cooperation Council implementing its stated goals. As efforts continue to end the war in Gaza and with renewed tension between the Gulf states and Iran, many regional analysts say the challenges the GCC face in realising their stated goals will remain.
