Gaza is experiencing a severe water shortage as Israel's blockade on fuel deliveries has brought most desalination and sewage treatment facilities to a halt. The limited water available is distributed at displacement camps, but long lines and insufficient supply mean many residents leave empty-handed. The security situation has also prevented municipal workers from repairing damaged water infrastructure, leaving large areas of Gaza City without access to water.

According to the International Rescue Committee, most people in Gaza are receiving far less than the World Health Organization's emergency standard of 15 liters per person per day. The municipality is currently pumping only 15% of the water it supplied before the conflict, with the majority of wells destroyed and only a few still operational. The lack of clean water raises the risk of disease among the densely populated population.

He can't afford to waste a drop of all the daily battles for survival in Gaza. This is perhaps the most important. It's mainly children who are trying to keep the water flowing, but there is no guarantee all the containers will be filled. We wait at the water plant for at least four hours because production is so low. Whatever we get, we hand out at displacement camps, and as you know, they're overwhelmed. People line up for hours from dawn, but many leave empty-handed. But soon, even this may not be possible. Israel has blocked almost all fuel deliveries from entering Gaza since March 2. The shortage is threatening to halt operations at desalination plants, sewage treatment facilities, and water delivery trucks. A water truck visits every three to four days. We don't get enough for our needs. There's never any water in the toilets. There's barely enough drinking water. So we have nothing left for personal hygiene or washing clothes. In the Gaza City area, the dangerous security situation means municipal officials can't get to the water mains or wells to repair them. We are on the verge of thirst, actually. The water can reach now only less than 50% of the total area in the city, while the other areas and neighborhoods can't get any water. The International Rescue Committee says most people in Gaza are receiving far less than the World Health Organization's emergency standard of 15 liters per person per day. The municipality is pumping just 15% of water it pumped before Israel's war. Most of it came from wells, 63 of which have been destroyed. Only 12 are still functioning.
