This is the beginning or a glimmer of hope for the Palestinian people. The world is changing its stance on countries that support Israel. They should join the countries that will vote in favour of establishing a Palestinian state and recognising a Palestinian state. We are a people who deserve to have a state. The least of our rights is for them to give us a country of our own where we can live in safety without fighting or missiles. Today, when we don't hear missiles, we are surprised. Three quarters of UN members now recognise Palestinian statehood. But for many Palestinians, recognition does not go far enough. They are calling for additional measures against Israel as it intensifies its offensive in Gaza. Other steps that can be taken against Israel include measures similar to those used against Russia, an economic boycott, banning them from the Olympics and other sports, and withdrawing investments. There are a lot of steps that along with the recognition of the state of Palestine could have an impact. International outcry is mounting over the spiralling death toll in the Gaza Strip and the state of UN-recognised famine, while in the occupied West Bank, Israel is expanding Jewish settlements, further diminishing hopes for a two-state solution.
