The creation of the UDP further strengthens Oligui's political position, following his recent presidential election win with nearly 95% of the vote. Oligui's rise to power began with the ousting of President Ali Bongo, ending the Bongo family's 56-year rule in Gabon. The launch of the UDP positions Oligui at the center of Gabon's evolving political landscape.

He won April's presidential election with nearly 95% of the vote. That followed the August 2023 coup when Nguni overthrew President Ali Bongo. Bongo's removal ended 56 years of rule by the same family. His father Omar Bongo led the country for more than four decades before Ali took over. With the launch of UDP, Ogili moves closer to cementing his position at the centre of Gabonese politics, becoming the architect of a new political order.
