A significant Arctic air mass is expected to move across the central and eastern United States later this week, bringing the coldest temperatures of the season so far. Cities such as Duluth, Minnesota could experience AccuWeather real feel temperatures as low as 55 degrees below zero, while areas as far south as Oklahoma City will see temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below historical averages.

The weather pattern will also bring repeated rounds of snow, with 1 to 3 inches expected from the Dakotas to the Great Lakes and up to 18 inches possible in parts of the Northeast due to lake effect snow. The coldest air is forecast to arrive Thursday and Friday, accompanied by the risk of impactful snow and ice storms at the start of the weekend.

Get ready for the coldest air of the season so far later this week, and I'm talking Accuweather real field temperatures down to even 55 degrees below zero. Somewhere like Duluth, Minnesota. That is dangerous cold, but even all the way down to Oklahoma City, we're going to see temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below our historical average, so where we should be this time of year. Let's put some numbers to this to give you a little bit more context, and then we'll talk about how we're in this situation. So let's use Minneapolis as an example. The coldest you've gotten so far this season is 11 below zero Thursday. You're low 20 degrees below zero and then you're high Friday. 10 degrees below zero, but it's not just the northern Plains and the Great Lakes. Somewhere like Pittsburgh in the Northeast. Well, you've gotten down to the single digits already, but Friday you're low one below zero, and then Saturday you're low single digits high in the teens. OK, so how do we get here? Well, we're still to start out the week in the same pattern we were in last week round after round of Arctic Air round after round of Clipper systems bringing a general one to three inches of snow from the Dakotas. Over into places like Michigan and the Great Lakes, then ultimately into the Northeast, especially as lake effect snow is then triggered where we could see up to 18 inches with the heaviest snow bands. But Wednesday the pattern totally shifts instead of little dips of the jet stream. We see a much bigger dip, so on this map the lighter shades of purple. That's colder air. We've already been there, but the dark shades of purple. That's the coldest air and we get into that Thursday Friday to start off the weekend when we're also are watching for that impactful snow and ice. Storm.
