He was recognized as an Officer of the Order of Australia and inducted into the Hall of Fame. He etched his name into the history books during the 1964 Ashes series against England. And that was it, the magic hundred that had so often eluded him. When he went from having never scored a century to hosting a triple century, carrying his bat for 311 runs and helping Australia retain the urn. He retired for the first time in 1968 after 50 tests, 29 of them as captain. But just like a stubborn opener refusing to give up his wicket, Simpson returned less than a decade later before turning his hand to coaching alongside captain Alan Border. I think we started to instil a better work ethic and the understanding that you only survived in the cricket teams if you performed. He's a pretty hard taskmaster, a very good disciplinarian. Together, they rebuilt a side that had been on the ropes, guiding the team to four consecutive Ashes series victories and ending the West Indies' 15-year unbeaten run. To me, toughness is not bouncing people out. It's something within the purse. And his coaching helped shape champions, including the likes of David Boone and the late Shane Warne. I think he's probably the best all-round cricket coach. He was made an officer of the Order of Australia and then later inducted to the Hall of Fame. Something I hadn't even thought about. Today, tributes have poured in. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese calling him an era-defining coach, while footballer Mark Bojnish has recorded treasured childhood memory.
