Forensic experts seek to unearth the truth about how hundreds of children died while in the care of the Catholic Church in Ireland.

A forensic team is conducting excavations at the site of a former Catholic mother and baby home in Tuam, Ireland, where a mass grave containing the remains of nearly 800 children is believed to exist. The site, now beneath a housing estate and playground, is being investigated as part of efforts to uncover the truth about the deaths of children who suffered neglect and mistreatment while in the care of the Catholic Church.

The Irish government previously issued a formal apology after an inquiry found that 9,000 children had died in 18 similar institutions, with many children forcibly separated from their mothers and given up for adoption. Survivors and relatives continue to seek answers and recognition for the suffering endured by the children and their families.

It shows my original name, Elizabeth Mary, which most people cannot take for granted, most adopted people, because many of them have been lied to in an effort to kind of further muddy the waters about their origins. Forcibly separated from her mother by the nuns, Susan was given up for adoption. It took 20 years to get them to release this crucial document, her birth certificate. The church, the Catholic church, set itself up above government, above scrutiny, and unfortunately scandals like TUME will illuminate just how they abused that power and how the government gave them that power and walked away. Behind these gates, effectively a crime scene in the middle of a housing estate, a significant page is about to be turned in the search for the remains of almost 800 children malnourished and mistreated while in the care of the Catholic church, whose bodies are believed to have been dumped into a disused sewage tank here. The Irish government made a formal state apology in 2021 after an inquiry found that in all 9,000 children had died in 18 institutions.
