Meteorologists are closely tracking the chance for new tropical storms to develop in the Atlantic from Oct. 6-12.

Meteorologists are monitoring two potential tropical systems in the Atlantic during a period of heightened activity. The first system is a wave coming off the coast of Africa, which could develop into a named storm if it follows a southerly path with lower wind shear. If it moves north, higher wind shear could limit its development.

A second area of interest is near the southeastern coast of the United States, with forecasters watching for possible development over the coming days. Additionally, an area off the coast of Mexico is being observed for potential impacts on the Gulf Coast. Forecasters emphasize the importance of remaining alert as the risk of tropical development remains elevated.

But I also want to point out that this time of year, you can see as we head into the early to mid parts of October, this is where we're at on the map, which is still a very active time of year. So definitely don't let your guard down because we are going to be watching out for an elevated risk here of tropical development going forward. There's going to be two storms that we're mainly watching out for. So we're going to break both of those down. The first one is going to be a wave that's coming off of Africa right now. And as of right now, it looks like there are going to be two separate paths possible for this wave. There's going to be a northward path and a southerly path. Now, this northward path, what we're showing here on the map is going to be wind shear. Now, wind shear is one of those things that could really tear a storm apart. And it actually prevents development from tropical waves for becoming tropical storms, from becoming hurricanes. So the darker the shade of purple on this map, the stronger the wind shear, which means the lower the potential for tropical development. So this northwardly track is going to be taking this storm, this wave into more wind shear, which means there's going to be a lower potential for development going forward. However, if it takes a southerly track, which our latest forecast has a higher likelihood of once again, look at this lower wind shear, which means a higher potential for tropical development, which is why for this wave here off the coast of Africa between today, tomorrow and Wednesday, we have a high potential of something to develop, including a named storm. So we'll be watching out for that. In addition, as we head into the weekend, we're also watching this area here across the southeast coast of the United States. The timeline on this is going to be a Friday, Saturday into Sunday. We're going to be watching our further development out here. We also have this area down here off of off of Mexico that we're going to be watching out for 7th, 8th, 9th. That's going to be as we head into tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday, that could have some impacts there across parts of the Gulf coast. So we will be watching this potential very closely heading into the weekend.
