Florida law enforcement agencies received $1.7 million in federal funding for their participation in the ICE 287G program, which allows local officers to collaborate with federal immigration officials in identifying undocumented immigrants accused or convicted of crimes. The Polk County Sheriff's Office received the largest share, over $1 million, to cover costs such as booking, housing, and transportation.

The state's Chief Financial Officer also announced proposed immigration reform legislation, including measures to require English-only commercial driver's license testing, prohibit undocumented immigrants from accessing workers' compensation and down payment assistance, and require insurance companies to bear financial responsibility for accidents involving undocumented drivers. The legislation is set to move through the Florida House and Senate.

Today, President Donald Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act in Minnesota. There's been growing protests in Minneapolis over the past week after a deadly shooting involving an ICE officer. The president and Department of Justice are blaming local leaders saying they're encouraging violence. Overnight, in Minneapolis, there was another shooting involving a federal immigration agent. This time, the agent shot a Venezuelan man in the leg. He claims the man took off during a traffic stop. The Department of Homeland Security says the man tried to get away and violently assaulted the officer who fired to, quote, defend his life. Those rising tensions come as Florida celebrated law enforcement across the state for enforcing immigration policies. Agencies are receiving additional funding to enforce federal immigration laws. Polk County reporter Rebecca Petit with why the state's CFO today was handing out checks to local sheriffs and the new legislation aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration. Sheriffs from across the state of Florida received reimbursement awards from the CFO for their participation in ICE's 287G program, with the Polk County Sheriff's Office receiving the largest amount of more than $1 million. The 287G program allows local law enforcement to work directly with federal immigration officials to identify undocumented immigrants who are accused of or have been convicted of crimes. Florida is leading this nation with arrests and deportations, almost 20,000 so far since we started this. A total of $1.7 million in federal funding was given to law enforcement agencies in Polk, Hernando, Hardy, Pasco, and Sarasota counties to ensure that they have the resources to continue to work with ICE to enforce federal immigration laws. The Polk County Sheriff's Office receiving the bulk of that money. Sheriff Grady Judd tells me 557 undocumented immigrants were arrested in Polk County in 2025. We're reimbursed for our resources, whether it be our bookend cost, our initial housing cost, whether it's transportation, fuel, gas, equipment, law enforcement officers cost. The CFO also outlined proposed immigration reform legislation. They include requiring all state commercial driver's license instruction and testing to be conducted only in English. It would also prohibit undocumented immigrants from obtaining workers' compensation coverage. The proposed legislation also blocks undocumented immigrants from participating in down payment assistance programs. And we want to require car insurance companies that insure illegal aliens using outlawed driver's licenses to fully accept the financial burden of a car accident involving an illegal alien.
