With crops destroyed and supply chains disrupted, food prices in local markets have nearly doubled, and shortages of fruits and vegetables are widespread. Residents continue to face uncertainty as more rain is expected, threatening the remaining arable land.

Reaching the villages of Gujarat is hazardous, roads have turned into rivers, the water cutting off entire communities. The floods have decimated villages, the farmland is destroyed, livestock lost. And what remains clings to strips of dry ground, with little food and nowhere to go. Here, livestock isn't just food, it's wealth. A cow or buffalo can be worth more than $2,000 and is often the main source of family income. My four brothers and I lost more than 100 livestock, that's buffalos, cows, large and small. They all died in the floods. We called the emergency number and appealed for help, but they didn't listen. They said, you're on your own, we can't help you right now. Mohammad Najaf watches over his remaining animals as they try to cool off in the flood waters. We lost the milk we used to sell. We're devastated. My health has suffered. I've also lost five to seven buffalos. It isn't just farmland that's been swept away. Homes have collapsed and those still standing are unsafe. We're two widows here. The floods came and damaged our home, the walls are cracked and unstable. Our animal feed was swept away, we've lost so many things. I've seen floods before, but nothing like this. The devastation is felt far beyond the villages. Punjab is Pakistan's breadbasket, feeding the country and exporting produce worth billions of dollars abroad. But now with vast swathes of farmland under water and crops destroyed, the impact is rippling through daily life. In the market here, people are already paying the price, quite literally, with food costs nearly doubling. Vendors say the shortages are hitting hard. Prices have gone up at least 50 percent, some items even more. There are no vegetables and fruits coming in, so obviously prices rise. You can see the impact here, everything has gone up.
