California is facing a renewed flood risk as two weather systems are forecast to impact both the southern and northern parts of the state around New Year's Eve and Day. Meteorological models, including the European and GFS, predict the event could reach an atmospheric river category 3 (AR3) intensity, with heavy rain beginning by Wednesday afternoon and continuing into Thursday morning, particularly in Southern California.

The expected conditions are similar to those experienced on Christmas Eve, though forecasts suggest there may be less rainfall and hopefully fewer landslides.
