Federal authorities have charged 20 current and former college basketball players in connection with a large-scale point-shaving and gambling scheme that reportedly generated millions of dollars for gamblers. The Department of Justice alleges the conspiracy involved bribes to players from 17 programs, targeting underdog teams and influencing the outcomes of nearly 30 games during 2024 and 2025.

According to investigators, 39 players were allegedly involved, with ringleaders offering between $10,000 and $30,000 to ensure teams lost by more than the predicted odds. The NCAA has stated that it has already completed or opened investigations into almost all teams named in the indictment, and court appearances for some defendants are expected soon.

We're going to turn now to a point-shaving scandal, raising new questions about the integrity of college basketball. Prosecutors are charging 20 current and former players, and say even more were involved in what they're calling a massive scheme that made millions for gamblers. For more, including what the NCAA is doing tonight to respond, let's get right to Justice Correspondent Scott McFarlane. Scott, good evening. Federal investigators say dozens of college basketball games were corrupted with bribes. Those pocketing money to change the outcomes. In a March 2024 game between storied Big East college basketball programs DePaul and St. John's, DePaul went into the half way down. According to a newly filed sweeping federal criminal case, some of the DePaul players schemed with gamblers and deliberately underperformed in the first half to ensure DePaul didn't cover the halftime point spread. One of nearly 30 college games in 2024 and 2025 in which the Department of Justice says gamblers paid bribes and convinced players to take a dive. An extensive international criminal conspiracy of NCAA players, alumni and professional bettors who fixed games across the country and poisoned the American spirit of competition for monetary gain. 39 players were allegedly involved across 17 programs. The ringleaders targeted players on underdog teams, offering them between $10,000 and $30,000 to make sure their team lost by more than the odds predicted. This was a significant and rampant corruption of college athletics. Last year the feds charged an NBA player with being part of a gambling scheme and two pro baseball players with doing the same. Today's case shows it spread to some smaller college programs where players can be more easily tempted. These are kids where a $5,000 inducement to throw a game or a $10,000 inducement to throw a game, that's a lot of money for them and it means more. The NCAA's president today said they have already finished or already opened investigations into almost all the teams in today's indictment. We expect court appearances by some of the defendants, Tony, in the coming days.
