Cooler, wetter conditions are moving in to Colorado and surrounding areas, as AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reports.

A notable change in weather is underway across the Colorado Front Range and areas east of the Rockies, with cooler temperatures and increased rainfall expected. Recent high temperatures in the 90s and concerns about wildfires are being alleviated as cold fronts move through, dropping temperatures into the 70s and bringing more moisture.

The new weather pattern is forecast to continue, with widespread rain, thunderstorms, and the potential for severe weather, including damaging winds and hail. While the rain may help with wildfire containment, it also brings the risk of flooding, especially in the coming days. There is even a possibility of light snow at higher elevations above 10,000 feet.

Fall-like weather arriving east of the Rockies

The Colorado Front Range is one of many areas that will be getting in on a big fall preview. And active weather meteorologist Tony Laubach joins us now from Denver, Colorado with a big change in the wind here. Tony, what's coming our way? Well, we are looking very much forward to it here along the Front Range. We've been dealing with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s and, of course, get a little further west in the mountains. It's been the wildfires that have been a concern, but all of that is soon to be alleviated. You see here over my right shoulder all the flags. Those are blowing due south. We have already seen the first of several fronts that have worked its way through here. We are seeing the temperatures dropping nicely. We're sitting right about 80 degrees right now. The active weather real feel I've seen a couple of times has been about 79 degrees here in the Denver area. So we are already seeing the cooler temperatures start to take hold. Off to my north, we're starting to see the dark skies as the upslope flow. The northerly winds around it are going to start to bring in a little bit more moisture and more clouds. That is going to be a rain concern, but so far today it's been absolutely gorgeous. We'll show you some of the scenes here at one of the shopping centers on the north side of Denver where we had folks out and about enjoying the cooler weather. Like I've mentioned, we've been in the 90s and uncharacteristically humid, if I might add, for a lot of the summer here in Colorado. We've been seeing off and on rain for the most part throughout most of the month, but we're really about to get into a pattern that's going to support a lot more widespread rain, even potential for some flooding rains as that push of monsoon moisture, which has been lacking overall, is going to start to work its way in in addition to the cooler temperatures that we are going to see primarily as we get into next week. Let's show you the graph of the temperatures we're expecting as we're going into next week. Folks, get the bell bottoms ready and the disco blasting because the 70s are about to stick around for a good chunk of next week. Going to be much, much cooler, but with that we're going to see clouds, rain, and the potential for some thunderstorm activity. Can't rule out a couple of severe thunderstorms as well. That is something we're going to be eyeballing here this afternoon along the front range as we kind of get settled into a deeper moisture here along the front range. The winds will pick up a little bit and that will increase some of the shear, so maybe some damaging wind gusts will probably be the primary threat. Can't rule out some hail as well. Heavy rain going to be a concern, especially as we get into later in the weekend, into early next week. That could bring the potential for some front range flooding. But again, the good news is we mentioned this is going to extend back off to the west as well, so that's going to help with some of the wildfire efforts. And I don't want to mention this word yet because I know this is kind of against policy at this time of year, but above 10,000 feet or so with these cold fronts, guys, we could be talking about a little bit of snow for some of the highest peaks. Nothing too crazy, but a word we might be saying here shortly. All right. Exciting times coming, Tony. We see those cooler signatures here on their temperature forecast for tomorrow, and we're looking forward to the big blast of cool following that. Absolutely.
