This increase in funding reflects the growing importance of space for sovereignty and strategic interests, highlighted by the role of space technology in the war in Ukraine. Despite the boost, ESA's budget remains below that of NASA, which operates with an annual budget of nearly €19 billion.

The top three donors are Germany with just over 5 billion euros, France with 3.6 billion and finally Italy with 3.5 billion euros. The European Space Agency is also counting on the support of Canada, which will contribute 400 million euros, five times more than the amount decided in 2022. In addition to these amounts, there is also private funding, which is up to 50% compared to the previous financial year. Contributions are on the rise because now more than ever, space is a matter of sovereignty. Space has become ever more strategic. The war in Ukraine started in space one day before Russian troops entered Ukrainian soil. And space technology keeps Ukrainian troops informed and connected to defend themselves. Despite this awareness and increased contributions, the ESA's budget remains well below that of the frontrunner in the space race, NASA. The U.S. agency has an annual budget of nearly 19 billion euros.
