The seventh annual European Union-African Union Summit opened in Angola on Monday, under the theme Promoting Peace and Prosperity Through Effective Multilateralism. Established norms of international geopolitics have been called into question. We're witnessing escalating conflicts, rising terrorism and extremism, and the devitalisation of international law. Africa is facing its own crises, political, security and developmental. However, for several decades, our leaders have thought about the path to follow to achieve a peaceful, integrated and prosperous Africa. 47 heads of state and government are participating in the summit. This year's event marks 25 years of EU-AU partnership. Africa and Europe are called to answer the very same questions. How can we create good jobs for our people? How can we deliver on the aspiration of our youth? How can we de-risk and diversify our economies? How can we break free from unsustainable dependencies while ensuring access to capital, resources and technologies we need? Excellencies, fellow leaders, I believe that many of the answers lie in our partnership. In a more confrontational global economy, Africa and Europe need each other more than ever before. The EU is Africa's leading trade partner, but relations have been strained by the growing influence of Russia, China and the US.
