Health officials said the longer season for mosquito-borne illnesses is becoming a "new normal" in Europe.

European health authorities have reported record levels of mosquito-borne illnesses, including 27 outbreaks of chikungunya and 335 cases of West Nile virus, the highest in three years. France is currently most at risk for chikungunya, while Italy has reported the majority of West Nile virus cases.

Experts attribute the rise in cases to climate-related changes such as longer summers, milder winters, and altered rainfall patterns, which create favorable conditions for mosquitoes. While two vaccines for chikungunya have been approved in the EU, there is no vaccine or specific treatment for West Nile virus, making prevention essential.

Europe is facing record-breaking levels of mosquito-borne illnesses. 27 outbreaks of chikungunya have occurred this year in Europe. The continent also recorded 335 cases of West Nile virus, the highest number in three years. Currently France is most at risk for chikungunya virus disease. And for Italy, for the West Nile virus, Italy is currently the most affected country. So out of the more than 300 reported cases, more than 270 have been reported in Italy. Europe's mosquito season is becoming longer and more intense as a result of rising temperatures, longer summers, milder winters and changes in rainfall patterns. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control say these make the perfect conditions for mosquitoes to thrive in. The climate changes in longer term affects both the distribution of the mosquito vectors and the time interval when the temperature is favourable for the transmission of the disease by mosquitoes. Most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms, but the virus can lead to neurological complications and is sometimes fatal. Chikungunya can cause headaches, fever, nausea and other symptoms. The European Union approved two chikungunya vaccines, but there is no vaccine that protects against West Nile virus. There is also no specific treatment for either of them. Prevention is therefore key to curb the viruses from spreading.
