The NGO attributes these risks to the EU's increased focus on border management and anti-smuggling measures in third countries, alongside reductions in humanitarian funding. Save the Children warns that these policy shifts are exacerbating the vulnerability of children migrating to Europe.

Similar situations were found in the Western Balkans, where one in five refugees and migrants hurt by the organisation experienced violent, illegal pushbacks by border police. The NGO said the EU's increase in border management and anti-smuggling support for third countries, while cutting humanitarian budgets, increases these risks for children.
