Efforts to find alternative trade routes have been encouraged by Afghan officials, but logistical challenges remain, as Pakistan remains the most efficient route for Afghan trade with global markets.

For more than a month, thousands of trucks have remained stranded at this border. There is no clear indication when trade might resume. That depends on the outcome of talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan that have reached an impasse following the worst fighting between the countries since the Taliban took over Kabul in 2021. Prices in the Afghan capital have shot up and people are complaining. Our traders are currently suffering because their goods are stuck on the Pakistan side. Both traders and ordinary people on both sides of the border are affected, creating serious problems. Pakistan also supplies the bulk of pharmaceutical products and the disruption in supplies is hiking prices and creating a shortage of essential drugs. Rising medicine prices will hurt ordinary people. Even a small loss for traders could mean a much heavier burden for families who rely on these medicines. Afghanistan's Deputy Prime Minister Mullah Abdul Ghani Brada has directed Afghan traders and industrialists to explore alternative trade routes instead of relying on Pakistan. But many here say that's easier said than done. For Afghanistan, transportation through Pakistan is the fastest and cheapest way to access global markets. But this vital trade route has been closed for over a month and its impact is being felt by people on both sides of the border. In Pakistan, we talk to people in Landi Kotal, a border town with Afghanistan, and they too are counting their losses. It's not just cross-border trade that's been affected. The closure has crippled our local businesses too. With no work left, many people have had no choice but to leave their homes to survive. It's not just traders, but daily workers who are out of work due to the closure. Imtiaz used to make $5 a day, but now worries how he will get his next meal. I used to work at the border crossing, and my livelihood depended on the trade there. Since the border has been closed, it's become very difficult to feed my family. The two countries have a strong bond steeped in history, but with relations sagged by the flare-up in conflict, that's being put to the test.
