Well, President Trump says that offshore drilling is coming to our California coasts, and we're still trying to imagine what that'll look like here in San Diego. But whether it's here in San Diego or anywhere north of us, environmentalists say that it's a devastating move that could be detrimental not only to our beaches, but to our way of life, and they're taking action to stop it. That's the sound of one of San Diego's critical economic drivers, its beaches. But a plan announced by President Trump to open more coasts to offshore drilling, including California's, could potentially impact that. Offshore drilling is when oil and gas companies drill wells in the ocean to pull up oil or natural gas beneath the seabed. Under this proposal, this could be just miles off our coasts, and it's opening a major fight from environmentalists. I mean, oil and gas drilling is devastating. That's Peter Stauffer with the Surfrider Foundation. He tells me he's opposed to the move and actively working to stop it. That's millions of acres that would be open to drilling. So a real major threat to our environment, our communities, our economy, and the way of life that we enjoy here in California. Beaches play a major role in the multi-billion dollar tourism industry across the state. The ocean economy is over $40 billion, so you think about coastal recreation, think about tourism, you think about fisheries. All those things depend on a healthy ocean. New offshore drilling hasn't been allowed in California since a 1969 oil spill, and communities are still recovering from Orange County's oil spill in 2021, which Stauffer remembers. We had our beaches closed for 10 days. We had fisheries closed for a couple months. And you saw the impacts to hotels and restaurants and other businesses. Meanwhile, supporters say it could increase the U.S. energy supply and provide jobs. The Surfrider Foundation is holding a people's hearing on December 4th to get the word out and let people's voices be heard. Despite the fact they want to open the entire California coast to drilling, no public meetings. So we are holding a public meeting. We're bringing together elected officials, business leaders, surfers, concerned members of the public to come out, learn about the issue. At Torrey Pines State Beach, Tali LaToy, ABC 10 News.
