Elon Musk has helped to lead efforts to shrink parts of the federal government in the Trump administration, but starting next month, he says he'll scale back his work with DOGE and shift his attention back to running Tesla.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, announced that he would be reducing his involvement in the Doge project associated with the Trump administration. Musk has been working as a special government employee, a role in which he is unpaid and legally permitted to work up to 130 days in the president's first year. Historically, Musk has played a significant role in administration efforts to reduce the size of certain federal government sectors.

The announcement comes as Tesla faces financial challenges, with a reported 71% drop in profits in the first quarter. Musk indicated that he will be dedicating more time to Tesla to address these issues, although he will still spend one or two days per week on government-related activities, as requested by the President. 

Tesla has experienced backlash and protests against Musk's controversial involvement with the Doge project, resulting in incidents of vandalism at Tesla showrooms and against its vehicles. Despite these tensions, Musk plans to continue offering some time to governmental responsibilities while prioritizing his leadership at Tesla.
